The Lightning Seeds are an English rock band formed in Liverpool in 1989 by Ian Broudie (vocals, guitar, producer), formerly of the band Big in Japan. Originally a studio-based solo project for Broudie, the Lightning Seeds expanded into a touring band following Jollification (1994).

What do you put on a collection of Lightning Seeds hits? When one looks at their list of hit singles, it is not that impressive: only 13 hits, only one of which reached the Top Ten, and that was one of their lesser-remembered tracks, “You Showed Me.” There’s a handful of ultra-commercial, highly melodic songs that very nearly made the big time — “Pure,” “Change,” “Perfect,” “Lucky You,” “Ready or Not,” “What If,” and “Sugar Coated Iceberg” all hit the Top 20 and most were given constant rotation on MOR-friendly radio stations, as a sort of sweetness-and-light version of New Order. They also had several minor hit albums, with Like You Do the pinnacle of their achievements (originally hitting number five) aside from one inspired piece of genius, and that was the music written and sung by Ian Broudie with lyrics by the comedians Baddiel & Skinner: “Three Lions” topped the charts originally in 1996, perfectly capturing the moment of the England Football Team at Euro 96. It was a football-related song that even the Germans fell in love with and it hit number one, played incessantly on the radio in 20-minute versions that included the highlights from the previous match’s commentary. And the song hasn’t gone away since; it was even re-released with updated lyrics for the 1998 World Cup, and it topped the charts again and has since re-charted in both 2002 and 2006 for the subsequent World Cups. It was a song much bigger than the Lightning Seeds could ever have been themselves, and maybe that’s why the band’s compilations tend to perform worse than expected — a lot of memorable singles, even if they’re not necessarily big sellers, and the one hit that goes on and on (it’s possibly the ultimate feel-good football song and destined to become a hit all over again in four-year cycles for decades to come).
Broudie put other projects on hold and embarked on a touring schedule: “ I'd been wanting to perform live again for some time and this was the first time I found myself talking to somebody at a record company who believed in Lightning Seeds ” Problems listening to this file? A promotional tour began in August 1994 with their lineup consisting of, guitarist, drummer, bassist and keyboardist Ali Kane. The tour benefited from the success of the second single from the album 'Change', which reached #13 in the, becoming Lightning Seeds second UK top twenty hit. The album Jollification became a critical success and the singles taken from this album, 'Lucky You', 'Marvellous' and 'Perfect' made noticeable impact.
An instrumental version of the song later became better known as the theme for the 'Goal of the Month' competition. The album Sense would mark Broudie's first Lightning Seeds song-writing collaborations with former singer.

Released on April 6, 1992, Sense simply continued the New Wave and Pop sensibilities of Broudie which was instantly apparent in its predecessor, Cloudcuckooland. There are instances where the reliance of the lover giving the 'fix' is reminiscent of an addiction. A 'bed of splinters' - like a withdrawal symptom; 'closed fown for winter' - isolation, no one knows how it feels; 'the more you get, the more you want' - greed and desire; 'standing high on tiptoes looking over fences' - waiting for the next fix; 'I want to jump deep into tides of loving madness' - wanting to experience the euphoria again. It sounds happy in melodic terms, but in lyrical structure it seems to characterise love as something less joyous and more torturous. A fascinating combination.

With 20 tracks and nearly 80 minutes of fun singalongs, this compilation could have been improved, sure. Peugeot planet 2000 manual. It did not need a pointless, lackluster version of “Be My Baby,” and the final track was the 1998 version of “Three Lions,” less than four minutes with a minimum of commentary from the final qualifying match against Italy. The collection should have included the original 1996 hit, complete with over the top patriotic commentary — then, the album may have been a number one.

After Big in Japan split in 1979, Broudie followed a brief tenure in the Original Mirrors by producing the first two Bunnymen LPs, Crocodiles and Heaven Up Here, as well as work by the Fall, Wah!, and Frazier Chorus. Seeking to return to performing, in 1982 Broudie teamed with Wild Swans vocalist Paul Simpson under the name Care; the duo released a series of shimmering singles that pointed in the direction Broudie followed in the Lightning Seeds, a one-man band backed by pop luminaries and session players. After scoring an international hit with the lush single “Pure,” the Lightning Seeds issued their debut LP, Cloudcuckooland, in 1989. Still, despite the record’s success, Broudie again returned to production, helming albums for groups like the Primitives, Sleeper, Alison Moyet, and the Frank & Walters. In 1992, Broudie revived the Lightning Seeds guise for Sense, on which he made synth programmer Simon Rogers (formerly of the Fall) a full musical partner.
