DTC P0401 - Insufficient EGR Flow This fault code most likely means one or more of the following has happened: • The DPFE (differential pressure feedback EGR) sensor is faulty and needs to be replaced • There is a blockage in the EGR (tube), most likely carbon buildup • The EGR valve is faulty • The EGR valve may not be opening due to a lack of vaccuum Now, about the possible solutions i n fixing this code, it is quite common for people to just replace the EGR valve only to have the OBD code return. I have a 07 bmw with a codes 2ef7,2ef4 - Answered by a verified BMW Mechanic. Those codes are both for the thermostat, so it likely needs to be replaced, or possibly the temp sensor is bad or there is internal leakage in the Rad. On this year of car I would suspect just the thermo is bad.
Thank you in advance but my car started throwing this code late last night. The fan comes on within five minutes of the car starting and keeps running full blast. There haven't been any drivability issues thus far but I've only driven about 30km (18 miles) since noticing the issue. No overheatimg light has popped up yet. I have cleared the code however it keeps popping back up within minutes of clearing. The car is just shy of 140000km (87500mi) and its running on the original pump/thermostat. It is a 2009 328i xdrive sedan Seeing how these parts are pretty pricy and difficult to diy on the xdrive models I'm hoping to get her back on the road as painlessly (for my wallet) as possible All advice is appreciated!

To whoever said there is a known failure range for the water pump.there is NOT. I've seen pumps fail at 20k and other go at 140k on the E9x. Since they are electric and not belt driven, there is no indicator for a failing pump. Although, I know a few people who have pulled codes from their DME indicating a reduced flow rate. The pump failed within the next few months. So if you have a way to pull codes from the DME and you get one telling you there is a reduced flow rate, it's time to replace that pump!Thanks for that info, I have DIS, that's how I got the thermostat error as it does not throw a CEL. The Peake codes are their reference to the actual OBD codes (or to BMW's extensions. I have no experience with Peake - but I assume that it is somehow set to the engine and model year that you have because the codes do change over time. Assuming that the code is correctly identified then it simply means that the DME is detecting some fault with that sensor circuit (getting a resistance reading that is out of normal parameters) or that the DME control circuit for the thermostat is itself defective. You are NOT correct about the affect.

He didn’t provide more detail. I recently pulled off the t-stat electrical connector and sprayed electrical contact cleaner on both t-stat and cable connector contact points. The electrical cable connector female contacts looked quite discolored. I tried scrapping them with an exacta knife, but it didn’t seem to make a difference. I reconnected, cleared the codes, started the car, and got the code again.
As far as the temp guage always being in the middle, there was a discussion about this at a recent club meeting at BMW headquarters. People were complaning about no temp guage on the newer cars.
